How to determine your Plastic/Poly Bag Dimensions?

There are two types of Plastic/Poly Bags, Lay Flat and Gusseted.

Lay flat bags are measured on Three dimensions.

  • Length (L)
  • Width (W)
  • Gauge (Mil)

1st measurement is the Width across the opening of the bag.
2nd measurement is the Length runs from the bag opening to the base of the bag.
3rd measurement is a Gauge (thickness) of the film which are usually listed in Mil.

Gusseted bags are measured on four dimensions for each Gusseted bag.

Example of measuring Gusseted Bag

  • Width (W)     5"
  • Gusset Depth (D)     1"+1"=2"
  • Length (L)     10"
  • Gauge (Mil)     ?
5" Width  x  2" Gusset  x  10" Length
Tubing folded 1" on each side = 2" Gusset
5" Width  +  2" Gusset = 7" Lay Flat Tubing or 12" Circumference
1st measurement is the width across the opening of the bag.
2nd measurement is the Depth measured by fully extending the gusset.
3rd measurement is the length which runs from the bag opening to the base of the bag.
4th measurement is a Gauge (thickness) of the film which are usually listed in Mil.

Fitting Bags to Containers

For  Round Containers

Width
Determine the width (circumference) of the bag by multiplying the diameter of the container by 3.14 and divide by 2. Add 1" for a looser fit.

Length
To determine the length of the bag, add 1/2 of the diameter to the length of the container. Add 5" to this for the total for overhang.

Tip - If tying bag,  add 1/2 the diameter to the bag length.

For Rectangular or Square Containers

Add the Width and the Length of the sides. Add 2" for a looser fit. The total equals the "Flat width" of the bag needed.

Add 1/2 of the Height of the container. Add 5" for an overhang. This equals the length of the bag needed.)

Tying Bag
If tying bag rather than lining carton, add 1/2 the length of the shortest side of the bag length.
Example of determining a Liner Bag:
To line a carton sized 15"(L) x 11"(W) x 20"(H)
    1. To determine the width of the bag: L + W + 2" or 15"(L) + 11"(W) + 2" = 28"
    2. To determine the height of the bag: 20"(H) + 5.5"(1/2W or 10) + 5" = 30.5"
    3. The suggesting size to line the carton is: 28" x 30.5" or 17"x 11" x 30.5"
